Treasures From Our Archive

Did you know? The National Monuments Record of Wales (the Royal Commission’s public archive) holds:
Over 1 million photographic records
Over 330 cubic metres in archive storage space
Over 102,000 digital records, the majority of which are available online
Over 70,000 plans, drawings and other graphic images

The National Monuments Record of Wales:
More than a century of surveying, recording and collecting has created a unique archive that documents the changing face of the Welsh historic landscape. It includes material on all aspects of archaeological, architectural, ecclesiastical, industrial, defensive and maritime history.

Is this Wales’ first ‘selfie’? An example of one of the more unusual photographs in our archive: industrialist and keen amateur photographer, Isaac Hayley, used a mirrored wardrobe so that he could photograph his own reflection at Glan-brân mansion in Carmarthenshire around 1900.

Find out more at the Royal Commission’s Archive Awareness Day on 12 November, 2014 – a day of talks and tours. Open to all!
